Wine buyer's notes: A glass-stainer that shows remarkable evolution for a youngster, the 2014, I suspect, is influenced by the fact that harvest was early last year for Santa Barbara, not one of those “Damn, it’s almost Thanksgiving and we need more hang-time” kinds of vintages. I was actually able to get Zac on the phone as I was writing this, and he listed his excellent vineyard sources (Clover Creek, McGinley and Camp 4, all in Santa Ynez), and told me about the weekend heat spike that brought the grapes into their full glory and ripeness during the first weekend in October.
He picked all three vineyards and varietals on the same day because he ferments everything together, which also helps to explain the cohesion exhibited. Gushing black and red berry fruits dominate, with extravagance and lushness that set this wine apart, even from the highly-rated previous releases. The increase in the percentage of Syrah is perhaps the clincher here, as it now comprises 50% of the blend, and amps up the thrill level to a greater hyperbolic degree.
Overstatement is impossible with this effort. It’s destined for plenty of approbation beyond my own."
